More fun stuff arrived today! Two small deliveries for my SG project and another, somewhat bigger package intended to propel me on the next step of my journey deeper and deeper into luthiery.
My SG related surprises were important but not exactly photo worthy – yet. First to arrive was my toggle switch ring, I went for a black one with gold writing which should go nicely with a black tip on the switch itself. The other package contained ten push/pull potentiometers, four of which will (hopefully) go into the SG and the rest into future projects.
I say hopefully because I am a little worried about whether my plan to wire up the SG like Jimmy Page’s “Number 2″ Les Paul will work or not and can’t be sure until the body arrives so I can measure the depth of the back cavity in the guitar. The pots are 27mm deep and would just fit into a Gibson built SG body but mine is custom made and may be a little shallower. I really hope that it all fits in there because I’m keen to do the Page style wiring in a Gibson shaped body and, until I graduate to neck-through-body guitar building, this is my best chance of achieving that. I can always deepen the cavity if the top is thick enough or, failing that, do the Page wiring in another body shape, so the world won’t end if this plan doesn’t come together.
I’m going to do a separate post on the other package, including some pictures, but until then I’ll just say that I have a nice old neck in my office that was originally on my 20 year old black Strat and was the catalyst for this whole guitar building hobby in the first place. The frets are very badly worn but, otherwise, the neck is nice and straight and in fine condition. I did a re-fret once before – on my very first electric guitar – and it went okay but I wrecked it by applying a poor finish to the the neck. I also tried to design and build a revolutionary new tremolo bridge mounting that was an epic failure but that’s another story. Suffice to say that that old thing ended up as scrap.
Anyway, I’m inspired to have another go so I’ve been doing some reading and decided to splurge on some tools to properly do the job. That’s what’s in today’s package and, as I say, all will be revealed in another post.
I’ve also been to Bunnings again and hit Stewmac one more time today but will reveal more in good time.
